Initially an authentication protocol, Open ID has evolved into a process for both authentication and profile exchange, with Yadis used for service discovery. Open ID was started by Brad Fitzpatrick and David Recordon at LiveJournal, which is now owned by SixApart. On September 11, 2006, DIX was merged into the Open ID 2.0 draft specification to consolidate the open source digital identity efforts.
JanRain has built an extensive set of Open ID libraries.
